Louis Sebastian Theroux is a Singapore born, British documentary filmmaker. What makes his films interesting are his unique style and great wit, both of which allow him to get into rather close knit communities that don’t usually open up to outsiders. Also, whether it’s his nerdiness that he radiates, or the air of naivety and innocence he has about himself, it makes people open up to him and share what really is in them. With that, I feel that Louis Theroux is able to extract information no other journalist would get. His Law and Disorder series is based on exploring areas known for rampant crime and out of control violence, as well as criminal activities that lead to them.
Law and Disorder in Johannesburg is a pretty gripping and intense look at the South African city whose residents are finding themselves increasingly besieged by crime. Louis Theroux exposes the real poor in the outskirts of Johannesburg, their private guards notorious for the use of “poison” – extreme violence to make people talk, and local criminals around the inner Johannesburg who control and patrol other criminals due to lack, incompetence or corruption of police. And as private guards grow increasingly violent, so do the criminal they fight.
One of the most striking parts of the documentary is an interview with a criminal who has an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He confesses to Louis Theroux that he intends to kill someone’s baby if they don’t pay up.
