New propaganda gore provided to the world’s media by Great Britain via the honourable state a Qatar has hit the newsstands. The pictures purport to show several men tortured and killed by the Assad government in Syria. They were allegedly starved, beaten, interrogated and eventually killed. The images are apparently part of a 55,000 image cache documenting the torture of 11,000 prisoners. It is claimed it was smuggled out of Syria by a defecting military policeman.
The first question I have to ask is how do we know these corpses are in Syria? And how do we know they were killed by forces loyal to Assad? Next, the bodies have not had their organs removed for cannibalisation, so if the story is true, the government is still not as bad as the rebels. Lastly, the block of countries bringing the legitimacy of Assad’s rule to question are not exactly models of human rights.
Qatar has numerous political prisoners, most notably Mohammed al-Ajami, a Qatari poet who was given a life sentence for speaking out against government policy at the Global Climate Change Summit held there in 2012. Freedom House ranks Qatar a 6 on a scale of 1 – 7 scale for political freedom, and 5 for civil liberties. That is the bad end of the spectrum.
Saudi Arabia ranks a 7 for both. Do we need to talk about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record? Imprisonment; beatings; executions. You do not want to get on the wrong side of the royal family over there. The people are subjects in the true sense, possessions of the crown. The “king”, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, said of introducing human rights into his kingdom: “It is absurd to impose on an individual or a society rights that are alien to its beliefs or principles.” In other words, providing human rights to his subjects is inconsistent with his beliefs or principles. And now his country is urging us to intervene is a war because bodies have been photographed purporting to be victims of torture in Syria?
Aziz, you are worse than Assad. You are a tyrannical despot who should be hung. Clean up your own act before trying to con us in to invading a sovereign nation with which you have had a long standing gripe.
Saudi rape victims are flogged for adultery, people who convert from Islam are executed, critics of the royal family or government policies are imprisoned and often disappear. This is one of the most oppressive and sinister regimes in the world, but they act with impunity because they are best buddies with the USA.
And of course, the USA is not without sin. Shall we have a quick reminder of Abu Ghraib?
Yes, Abu Ghraib; Guantanamo Bay; exportation for torture… The US has violated the UN Charter for Human Rights and the Geneva Convention for over a decade. Yet now, because of these pictures interestingly released at a ‘peace conference’, we are supposed to agree with the US and expend our money and soldiers lives there, upholding these same charters and conventions?
I am in no way suggesting Assad is the model dictator. But when you are fed a stream of propaganda by the western media, ask yourself the question: why is Assad a target when he is only one out of a bunch of nasty leaders in the region.
It has nothing to do with human rights. It has nothing to do world peace. This is about a power bloc, centred around allies of the US, and opposing anyone who threatens or potentially threatens the regional authority of Israel.
