Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is an outlawed militant group operating out of Garo Hills region in Meghalaya state, north-east India.
In this video, GNLA militants are shown caning villagers suspected of being police informants so as to deter others from ratting on them.
The video was recovered from a cell phone of one of GNLA militants who had been killed during a shootout with police.
Police spokesperson said they do not use villagers as informers because it would put them at risk. He further said he thinks the militants probably knew there were no rats among the villagers, but wanted to ensure they are compliant with their demands and don’t provide any information about them to anyone in case someone asks.
