18 Year Old Student Dies After Fraternity Hazing in Makati, the Philippines

An 18 year old De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde student named Guillo Cesar Servando died after undergoing hazing of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Makati, Metro Manila, the Philippines. The deadly hazing was performed in a house in Barangay Palanan, close to One Archers Tower where the victims stayed after the initiation rites.

The Tau Gamma Phi fraternity distanced itself from the the fatal hazing and laid blame on its individual chapter that doesn’t abide by the fraternity’s “no hazing” policy.

In a sworn affidavit, survivor of the hazing named John Paul Raval stated that:

The initiation rites was started around 6:00 p.m. and lasted until about 9:00 p.m. During initiation he (Raval), Flores, Agustin and Servando were subjected to severe mental and physical punishment, they were hit, whipped and harshly flogged mostly on their legs by the Tau Gamma Phi members using belts and wooden paddle…

Nothing like getting beaten to death by guys whom you’ll be expected to call brothers. I have an uneasy feeling that because this happened in the Philippines, if the killers are from rich families, which is quite likely because Makati is a posh business district of Metro Manila, this will be just another one of those causes that will get brushed under a rug and quietly archived.
