33 year old woman from Guarujá in São Paulo, Brazil was lynched and killed after someone accused her of kidnapping children for black magic rituals. The accusation started with a post on Facebook titled “Guarujá Alerta” and a sketch of a woman who looked just like 33 year old Fabiane Maria de Jesus and that’s all locals needed. They caught the woman, beat her senseless, clubbed her in the head with a 2×4 and dragged her behind a bicycle before leaving her for dead in the dirt. When police found her, they thought she was dead, but then she showed some signs of life so they took her to a hospital where, despite intensive care, the woman died two days later.
I may sound like a broken record, but I must express that I find everything about this story incredibly upsetting. If there’s anyone who’ve seen the worst of humanity, it’s us here at Best Gore. Some of the crimes we see are so heinous, if they were met with this type of response, it would seem more than justified. But the obvious downside of “justicia popular” is that the pointed at victim doesn’t get a chance to speak to his/her own defense. They just get pointed out and the whole mob instantly picks up the outrage of the accusation and becomes the judge, jury and executioner. Perhaps sometimes they get it right, but there are just too many cases of innocent people getting beaten to death and that’s plain and simple unacceptable.
Through mob justice, anyone can have anyone destroyed by just making up a lie and accusing them of it. It’s that simple. In case of men, it’s as easy as accusing them of being a rapist. Did they really rape someone or not? Mob doesn’t ask that question. Mob responds to accusation and doesn’t listen to the accused.
Hey – I momentarily don’t like you because [insert random "can't get over myself" reason here], so I’m gonna scream from the top of my lungs that you’re a rapist, or that you kidnap children for black magic rituals and let mob justice take care of you.
